Ball State athletics department now on Twitter

The Ball State University athletics department has a new way to communicate with its fans.

The athletics department launched its own Twitter account, bsuathletics, Monday morning.

Twitter is the latest trend in social Web sites and is a form of microblogging that lets users to publish tweets - text updates of 140 characters or less. These updates are published on the Web site, Twitter.com, and can be viewed by people who follow the user - known in Twitter as "followers."

bsuathletics posted its first tweet at about 10 a.m. Monday. The tweet stated "Ball State Athletics is officially on Twitter!"

Prior to Monday, Ball State was one of four Mid-American Conference schools to not have an athletics department Twitter account. Other MAC schools have previously used their Twitter accounts to tweet about everything from upcoming events to game scores. This is not the first time people in the athletics department have used Twitter. Coaches such as football assistant coach Jason Eck, gymnastics coach Nadalie Walsh and women's golf coach Katherine Mowat each had individual Twitter accounts before the athletics department created its account.
