Teachers College dean Weaver honored at reception

Retiring head of Teachers College gets scholarship named after him

More than 100 faculty members, students and supporters gathered Wednesday to congratulate Roy Weaver, the retiring dean of the Teachers College, on his 29-year career as a leader and scholar at Ball State University.

Weaver, who has been dean for 16 years, is best known for his initiatives, including implementing electronic portfolios in the classroom and heading the initiative for Ball State's 35 charter schools around the state.

Associate Dean Tracy Cross has been working with Weaver during his entire time as dean.

"He's really remarkable. He deserves all the credit he can get," Cross said. "Every element of the Teachers College has been profoundly influenced by Roy Weaver. He began endeavors that most universities would not undertake."

The reception, which was held at the Museum of Art, featured a short speech from Provost Terry King. He praised Weaver's ability to manage day-to-day duties, solve problems and lead his department toward the future.

President Jo Ann Gora, who has never attended a retirement reception in her five years at Ball State, came to recognize Weaver's accomplishments.

"My policy was, if I can't go to all of them, I shouldn't go to any," she said. "But I just had to make an exception for Dean Weaver."

Weaver also gave a small speech thanking his faculty and family for all the support they have provided.

"Any success I've had has been because of other people," he said.

Weaver received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ball State. He completed a doctorate at Indiana University and taught at the University of Southern California for five years before returning to Ball State in 1980 to teach.

After teaching for four years, Weaver was promoted to the position of associate dean of the Teachers College for nine years and in 1993 he was named dean.

Although he is retiring as dean, Weaver will remain a faculty member in the Department of Educational Studies and said he is looking forward to teaching and doing new things.
