Indiana House could vote on Democrats' proposed budget Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana House has advanced a budget proposed by majority Democrats.

House Democrats tweaked their one-year budget Wednesday, with Republicans opposing some amendments. The House could vote on its budget plan Thursday, sending it to the GOP-led Senate. Senate leaders could outline their two-year budget proposal later this week.

The House Democrats proposed a 2 percent increase to higher education funding last week. This differed from Gov. Mitch Daniels proposal to decrease higher education funding by about 4 percent.

The Senate budget is expected to include help for the Indianapolis Capital Improvement Board and its $47 million budget gap. A House committee didn't advance a separate bill to help the agency, which runs the city's major sports stadiums and convention center.

Lawmakers have until June 30 to adopt a new state budget before the current one expires.
