Construction worker injured at Sigma Phi Epsilon house

A construction worker was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a construction accident at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ball State University.

The worker was tearing down the former Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house at 1515 Riverside Ave. when the excavator he was operating fell into the basement, crushing the cab. The name of the worker was not immediately released.

Construction workers working at the fraternity house and across the street at DeHority Complex helped the worker out of the excavator before emergency units arrived.

A University Police officer said the worker's arm was cut up and bloodied, but he did not have any very serious injuries. Witnesses said they were shocked he was alive.

Work has stopped at the site for the day and the excavator remains in the ground.
