BASEBALL: Reliever goes from intern to front office to the mound

Only a month since graduating, former Ball State baseball relief pitcher Tom Mueller has changed jobs, but is keeping the same work address.

After interning with the Evansville Otters during the summer of 2008, Mueller was hired full-time as an account executive after graduation. His aspirations to play professional baseball and solid stats while at Ball State earned Mueller a tryout with the Otters. After being called back for a second tryout, Mueller got a call from the Otters' manager saying they wanted him to join the pitching staff.

Mueller debuted for the team June 9 against the Southern Illinois Miners. Mueller struck out his first batter and then walked the next two before being relieved.

"I actually wasn't too nervous for the game," Mueller said. "I was nervous when we got the phone call down in the bullpen, but once I ran out on the field, I didn't feel nervous."

Even though he is now pitching, Mueller is not forgetting his previous job.

"I'm actually going to still try to do whatever I can for them in the front office during the season, maybe database stuff, something I can help out with while traveling," Mueller said. "After the season, I'll be working full-time again until the following season starts."
