Ian Nielsen started his college career with a blast and his freshman year ended with more fanfare.
The Ball State University first baseman was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team Wednesday. Nielsen is the 11th Cardinal to be honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, who chooses the team.
Nielsen hit .360 with seven home runs and 48 RBI this year. In his first collegiate at bat, Nielsen hit a home run against Furman University. He was also named second team All-Mid-American Conference.
The only other MAC player named to the Freshman All-American team was Kent State University closer Andrew Chaffin.
