BASEBALL: Nationals draft Ball State catcher in 48th round

Catcher Zach Dygert became the third Ball State University baseball player taken in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player draft when he was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 48th round on Thursday.

Dygert joins center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker and pitcher Brenden Stines, who were taken earlier in the draft. It is the first time since 2006 the Cardinals had three players drafted.

Before the draft Dygert was projected to be taken between the 20 and 25th rounds, according to coach Greg Beals. During the 25th round Wednesday, Beals said it was getting close to the point when Dygert would choose not to sign a professional contract and return to Ball State for his senior season.
