Ball State professor wins state award

A Ball State University director was presented with the Distinguished Hoosier Award, which recognizes individual achievement in Indiana's communities, on May 12.

Elaine Fisher, director of Ball State's Building Better Communities, has secured more than $3.5 million in grant funds for the community outreach program.

The program is made up of a team of students who work to solve community problems across Indiana as part of Ball State's immersive learning program.

At Building Better Communities, Fisher's responsibilities include providing educational programs for communities, public speaking and creating community development projects.

Fisher said it is great to be able to help a community move forward.

"It was very gratifying to receive an award for recognition from your peers," she said. "It was a huge surprise and I was quite taken back."

Fisher graduated magna cum laude from Ball State with a bachelor's degree in human resources development.

Fisher has also been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the American Economic Development Council, the Inaugural Excellence in Leadership Award by the Indiana Economic Development Association and the National University of Continuing Education Association Award.
