A group of six Ball State University meteorology students will take an unusual summer vacation to track and chase storms across the Great Plains.
The 10 to 14 day trip will be headed by meteorology professor David Call, who is also a former television weather broadcaster.
Students will travel about 6,000 miles, learning meteorology skills, blogging and posting videos and photos about their experience on their Facebook pages.
According to the press release, Call said the group is traveling to the Great Plains because storm systems in that region are much stronger than those in the Midwest.
"There is no substitute for making a forecast in the morning and seeing how it pans out in the afternoon," Call said in a press release. "Students also get a better understanding of storm dynamics. It is one thing to see it on the screen, but to witness it in person is completely different."
The group includes Jeremy Trusty, Andrew James Duvall, Korey Klein, Brad Maushart, Heather Nicole Osbon and Derek Allan Lawalin.
