The Ball State University women's golf team found itself in 11th place in a 15-team field after the first two rounds of play at the Indiana Invitational in Columbus.
The Cardinals are at 75-over par, 25 strokes behind the leader UNLV, who shot a tournament team best of 309 in the second of two rounds played on Monday.
The weather did not make for an easy day on the course, coach Katherine Mowat said.
"I can't believe we got in 36 holes given the projected weather," Mowat said. "It turned out better than we thought, but it was a long and very challenging day on the golf course to say the least."
Sophomore Rachael Pruett led the Cardinals individually with a two-round score of 157 (79-78) and is tied for 13th place individually.
Fellow sophomore Brittany Kelly was in third place after round one but fell to a tie for 27th after the completion of the second round with a two-round total of 161 (76-85).
"Her first round was great," Mowat said. "The conditions in the second round were actually better. When you have it going during your first 18 holes in a 36-hole day, usually you are in a good situation where you can keep on playing well. It didn't quite happen for her in the second round."
Junior Kirsty O'Connor shot a 166 while senior Sarah Windlan and freshman Kristtini Cain both shot a 167. Paige Esford rounded out the team with a 173.
The weather affected even the best of teams. Mowat described the performance of UNLV, which is ranked 31st in the nation, as "probably the worst they have shot all year."
Ball State enters the final day five strokes behind the 10th place team, Illinois State University. The 12th place team, Western Michigan University, is at 98-over par, 23 strokes behind Ball State.
Play will resume today with the third and final round. GolfStat.com is providing live scoring.
