IPFW dean considered for Teachers College

First candidate gives solutions to problems in educational system

A former high school drop-out is one of two candidates to take over for Roy Weaver as the dean of the Teachers College.

Barry Kanpol offered solutions to problems facing the American education system in Bracken Library on Monday during the first of two open forums to select a new dean for the Teachers College.

Kanpol is the dean of the School of Education and director of the Division of Public and Environmental Affairs at IPFW.

Kanpol is a Melbourne, Australia, native who dropped out of high school before getting his diploma at the American International School when he immigrated to Israel in 1973.

He came to the United States in 1983 and received his master's and doctorate from Ohio State University.

Kanpol said diversity of workforce, the link between academia and the realities of schools, linking our world to education globally and inequality in the education system were problems facing the American education system.

He said equipping students with a broad range of knowledge, having teachers work collaboratively to produce academic journals and using faculty strength to redefine service were some of the solutions.

Kanpol said academia should respond to several questions involving the teaching force responding to diverse populations, reaching out globally and making the work of the Teachers College meaningful as agents of change to students and leaders in the field.

John Merbler, chairman of the department of special education, said the college is looking for a strong leader who can meet the challenges that face education today and into the future.

He said the school is looking for a leader who can work more closely with the schools, the faculty and other constituencies to move the college forward.

Kanpol said he can meet Ball State's standards and work with it in the future.

"The history of Ball State is strong," Kanpol said. "I would like to be a part of that history. I'd like to be a block of that history."
