Free the Slaves promote awareness

About 25 attend a documentary about illegal sex trafficking

About 27 million people live in slavery around the world and 14,500 are trafficked in the United States.

To raise awareness about the issue of slavery around the world, Free the Slaves' Ball State University chapter showed an episode of "Frontline" about the sex slave industry Wednesday evening in Teachers College.

About 25 students attended the presentation that highlighted the illegal sex slave trade between Eastern European countries and Turkey.

Phil Call, president and founder of the Ball State chapter of Free The Slaves, said the main goal of the organization was to stop all forms of slavery.

"Our goal on campus is to raise awareness that slavery exists," Call said.

The Ball State chapter, which was started last year, wanted to raise money for the larger organization based in Washington, D.C., he said.

According to the Free The Slaves Web site, the organization works on the ground with liberators around the world to do what it takes to free men, women and children and help them stay free.

Free the Slaves educates, motivates and activates people with shared strategies, stories and lessons, the site said.

Junior Julia Goins got involved with the organization a few months ago. She said she wrote a paper for a class about free trade, and from that she was interested in fair trade.

The economic system in the United States outsources jobs to Third World countries, Goins said. These countries employ slave labor to make low cost products for export.

Fair trade is when you buy something that guarantees the product was produced ethically, she said.
