Fashion promotions class raises money for Riley's by producing magazine

Models strutted around the room at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts for the unveiling of High Contrast Magazine on Saturday night.

The magazine was put together by the fashion promotions class. Each of the 34 students had a page in the magazine that featured a profile of each student and several design lines, style lines and illustrations.

Hundreds of people attended the event, which lasted from 5 to 8 p.m., and the class sold about 400 tickets in advance, student Kathleen Stemmer said. Tickets and the magazine were $5 at the door, and all of the proceeds went to Riley Children's Hospital.

The event marked the first time the fashions promotions class decided to put on something other than a fashion show, Stemmer said.

The magazine cost $2,200 to make and the class printed 400 copies, instructor Audrey Robbins, said. Each student in the class was required to find two sponsors, one monetary sponsor and the other a sponsor for giveaways, Robbins said.

Cortex Hair and Salon, Friendly Package, Sunshine Café and Pita Pit were just some of the sponsors of the event.

Justin Feichter, a student in the class, said he was excited about the event and the magazine.

"We had good sales. It's something we haven't done before in the department," Feichter said. "It'll be interesting for people to see something new coming out of our department."

Junior marketing major Ross Lampkins said he attended to support a few of his friends in the class and was impressed.

"There's a lot of people that came here - I didn't realize how big this was going to be," Lampkins said. "I think it's great. I've never been to a fashion show."
