BASEBALL: Freshman wins another weekly MAC award

A weekend full of rain couldn't wash out the Ball State University baseball team from the weekly Mid-American Conference Awards.

Freshman first baseman Ian Nielsen was named MAC West Player of the Week for the second time this season today. Ball State only played a Sunday doubleheader of its weekend series against the University at Buffalo, but Nielsen made the most of it. He went 6-for-9 against the Bulls and drove in five runs, helping the Cardinals to a sweep.

Nielsen hit 7-for-13 during the week and is now hitting .374 overall.

Ball State has had a player honored in each week of the season by the conference. Nielsen's first award came in the first week of the season.

Ohio University left fielder Mark Krauss won the MAC East Player of the Week and Kent State University reliever Andrew Chafin was the MAC East Pitcher of the Week. Freshman starting pitcher Rick Dodridge of Central Michigan University was the MAC West Pitcher of the Week.

Nielsen and the rest of the Cardinals will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Purdue University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
