For the first time since 2006, the Ball State University baseball team defeated a ranked opponent, knocking off No. 23 Ohio State University 20-8 Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio.
The Cardinals (17-17) scored all 20 of their runs in the final four innings to come from behind and beat the Buckeyes. Senior reliever Tom Mueller (1-2) earned the win, allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings. Sophomore reliever Jered Stayer took the loss to fall to 0-1.
Sophomore third baseman Kolbrin Vitek delivered an RBI double in the seventh inning to give Ball State its first lead of the game. Vitek then delivered a knockout blow in the eighth with a grand slam. Vitek finished the game 3-for-5 with six RBI, two runs and two doubles.
Junior catcher Zach Dygert began the Cardinals' comeback in the sixth inning with a three-run home run and was one of seven Cardinals with a mult-hit game.
Ohio State (29-9) was unable to hold the lead freshman starting pitcher Ross Oltorik helped the team to with five scoreless innings. Ball State is the second Mid-American Conference team to beat the Buckeyes in eight days, joining Kent State University.
