Best-selling author Jean Chatzky will kick off Financial Literacy Week with a presentation which draws heavily from her new book "The Difference: How Anyone Can Prosper In Even the Toughest Times."
Ray Montagno, associate dean at the Miller College of Business, said he hoped Financial Literacy Week would be the beginning of a strategy for the business college and Ball State University.
"We want to make Ball State a national player for its financial literacy programs," Montagno said. "We hope to attract outside partners as well."
Tammy Estep, director of external relations, said she made arrangements for Chatzky's speech through the Speakers Bureau.
Estep said Chatzky's message would benefit students. Chatzky has written nearly a dozen books about finance, and she has retained her philosophy: if you want to own your life, you have to own your money.
"Her book is pretty interesting," Estep said, "and I think students should get something out of it. It's about business, but it's also behaviorally and psychologically based."
According to her Web site, Chatzky's book suggests greater wealth can be attained by anyone who has intuition, knowledge and direction.
Montagno said her national reputation and multitude of learning materials make her a credible source for the general public. He hopes her presentation will bring notoriety to the university, he said.
"She likes speaking at universities," Montagno said, "and this is a good way to get her message across to students."
The presentation is 6:30 p.m. on Monday at John R. Emens Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.
