12 teams turn out for Cardinal Chili Challenge

Local judges select winners of seven categories

Friday afternoon was chilly, but not chilly enough to stop people from going to the Public Relations Student Society of America's 10th annual Cardinal Chili Challenge on University Green.

Katie Gammon, PRSSA special events director, said the group made about $500 this year. The money goes to the group's annual funds.

Gammon said the money allows them to attend national conferences and work with other organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters.

She said this is the best year they've had.

She said 12 teams competed, which was a good amount. The teams came from the greek community, residence halls, faculty and church organizations.

"Every year PRSSA shoots for 10 to 15 teams, so 12 teams is a great turn out," Gammon said.

Local judges Mayor Sharon McShurley, sophomore Colts cheerleader Breanna Fonner, senior women's basketball player Porchia Green and senior men's basketball player Brandon Lampley tasted the chili and decided the winners, Gammon said. Max FM DJs Randy Rankin and DJ MacKenzie Lee emceed the event.

Chili Challenge awards went to the spiciest, most creative, best overall, best greek, best residence hall, best independent organization and best faculty chilis, Gammon said.

Door prizes donated from sponsors around the community were given out throughout the event. Rockstar also sponsored the event, she said.

Andrew Wiebold, winner of the spiciest chili dish, said he likes to see people's reactions when they taste his chili.

"I also won spiciest chili last year, and I'm up to challenge anyone who thinks they can make spicier chili than me."

Chris Minnix, winner of the best greek award, said he came out to represent the greek community, win prizes and drink free Rockstar.

Gammon said the great turnout was great with the variety of organizations that participated. She hopes the event will become even bigger
