Up 'til Dawn to restart Fall '09

Sorority to pick up

The recently canceled student philanthropy Up 'til Dawn may restart with a different affiliation during the 2009 Fall Semester.

Hilary Brown, Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority president, said the sorority was considering adopting the student philanthropy that raised money for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Tiffany Washington, assistant director of student life, said ESA is a possible outlet that can support Up 'til Dawn because the sorority already helps St. Jude with its philanthropies. The Office of Student Life has not contacted ESA about Up 'til Dawn, Washington said.

Brown said if ESA could obtain Up 'til Dawn by this fall, the group would encourage other people and groups to join in.

"We'd like to, at some point, possibly form our own executive board and do the letter writing and finale event," Brown said. "Hopefully we can still have some campus support. It would still be everything Up 'til Dawn was, just an official ESA event."

The Office of Student Life gave a letter to President Megan Johnson and 4 other members of the Up 'til Dawn executive board March 18 telling them the program was terminated because "at this time Ball State would like to focus on the demands of the Dance Marathon program," according to the letter.

Lynda Wiley, director of student life, said the reason the group was discontinued was because the group never really took hold of real student interest. The group had many members interested and who worked hard, but was not able to pull in support from the student body outside of those already in the organization, she said.

Washington said a lack of members and difficulty forming an executive board played a key role in the decision.

"It seemed to us that campus had been moving towards supporting Dance Marathon," Washington said. "[Student Government Association] supported it and a larger body of students seemed to be leaning that way. The numbers for Up 'til Dawn were also on the decline."
