Ball State University began drilling test holes today for its geothermal energy project that begins the day after Spring commencement.
Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said test well fields are common for projects like this. The test holes will be used to test the capacity for heat exchange.
Three companies will drill the holes, install tubing and lay grout around the holes today and Thursday.
The holes will sit for three days, then one of the companies will run water through the tubes to measure the capability to exchange energy.
The data will be used to assist designers in planning the final project.
