THOUGHTS FROM THE JOHN: Shows suggest unconventional view of history

The History Channel: New faith, Sabbath is Tuesday. Be there.

It's a hell of a thing to imagine the last few thousand years of human history as a lie, a misguided attempt at control over society, a total sham. I think most people are content to dawdle through life without thinking about its mysteries. I'd love to stumble through this hopeless existence in blissful ignorance, but the History Channel makes it hard to do. It's always teaching me crazy stuff! And it's stuff you'd think everyone should know! No one seems to. That's why I've decided to speak out and get this History Channel conspiracy thing rolling.

Last week, I learned that it's probable aliens came to Earth and helped build the ancient world's most impressive monuments and structures. The evidence is staggering! The things this program showed me defied thousands of years of human history and the evolution of all the world's major faiths. I can't imagine the Pope watching it and coming away still having complete faith in the point behind his white robes and gold trim.

Look at the 400-ton interlocking stones of Puma Punka in Bolivia, made of diorite. It's a very hard form of granite that can only be cut with diamonds and the blocks show evidence of machine work.

It's diamond-tipped machining apparently done by Stone Age people who wore loin cloths and got around in boats made of reeds. The massive stones, assembled before the invention of the wheel, could never have been moved. There aren't even any trees to use the theory they have for how the Celts moved the stones of Stonehenge - roiling them on logs.

There are pyramids all over the world supposedly built by civilizations that didn't know each other existed. Is that a coincidence? Look at how many people claim to see a UFO or to have made contact with aliens. Can they all really be crazy?

Imagine a hypothetical boy who has been raised to the age of 18 without any knowledge of religion, creation or any other faith-based system of beliefs. He understands basic high school subjects such as math, science and English. On his 18th birthday, it's time to tell him how people came to hold dominion over the Earth.

On one hand, you can tell him the universe is vast and limitless. It stands to reason that our little blue marble isn't the only one in all of infinite space and time to support life. Some of that life was so advanced that it came to Earth and helped people grow intellectually and use tools. They helped build edifices and monuments. They taught us things beyond our power of discovery and understanding.

Look at the evidence. The Great Pyramid's corners precisely mark the four directions of the compass thousands of years before the invention of the compass, let alone their uncanny placement and the construction of their inner chambers.

On the other hand, you can tell the boy that an all-knowing, all-seeing entity that exists beyond our reality made the world with his hands in six days then took a siesta on the seventh. He sees all, knows all and is in all places at once. He loves you but he judges and tests you. He is above humans and is not subject to human weakness, but he loves, he gets angry, he is vain and he is jealous.

If this worries you, take heart. He will always accept you.

He will always forgive you when you've sinned. Everything happens according to his plan but you can't know the nature of that plan. You should accept that you can't understand it and be of blind faith. It's the only way to be a good person.

By the way, the Bible was written by men who only bore witness to its stories. Some of them lived hundreds of years later and were crazy. Oh, and there are other gospels, but the Church decided long ago to throw some away and only let you read the ones they liked.

Yup, the History Channel is killing Jesus.
