The student philanthropy "Up 'til Dawn" was put to sleep Wednesday by the Ball State University Office of Student Life, according to a letter sent from the office.
According to the university's Web site, Up 'til Dawn raises money and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Up 'til Dawn President Megan Johnson said Student Life told the group that it could no longer be an official student organization because "at this time Ball State would like to focus on the demands of Dance Marathon program."
Up 'til Dawn, a campuswide organization with 120 members, raised $17,000 for St. Jude this year, Johnson said.
The Dance Marathon raised a little more than $10,000 for Riley Hospital for Children this year, according to previous reports by The Ball State Daily News.
Tiffany Washington, assistant director of Student Life, said Ball State is not cutting its ties to St. Jude, just Up 'til Dawn.
Washington said 75 to 80 percent of participants in Up 'til Dawn's letter writing campaign, the main fundraiser for the group, are members of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, which already has St. Jude as one of its philanthropies.
