Spring Break table raises awareness

Event teaches about dangers of alcohol and smart partying

Partying, beaches and road trips were common conversation starters Wednesday afternoon as students milled around the Health Education table for Spring Break Safety Week in the Atrium.

The Health Education Department wanted to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and unprotected sex while also stressing the importance of partying smart, health education graduate assistant, Jessica Stevens, said.

"The students end up learning a lot of stuff, especially about alcohol poisoning and what steps to take if they think their friend is a victim of it," Stevens said. "We don't want to scare or reprimand any of the students right before Spring Break, but we do want them to make responsible choices."

The table consisted of informational games that provided facts about alcohol consumption, Ball State University regulations and Indiana state laws. The games included tic-tac-toe, "Alcohol Feud," an imitation of the Family Feud game show and miniature golf with drunk goggles on. Frisbees and water bottles were also given away as prizes.

Event workers also helped students make bracelets with ultraviolet sensitive beads. The idea was to strengthen students' attention toward the danger of sun exposure because the beads serve as automatic reminders to apply sunscreen when they change colors if exposed to the sun for too long.

"The bracelet is probably going to help me the most because I'm going home to Lakeland, Fla. for the whole week," freshman Stephanie Katz said.
