Sorority bowls for charity

Local Girl Scout troops, community members to participate

Kappa Delta sorority invites Ball State University and the Muncie community to bowl and raise money for VSA arts and Prevent Child Abuse America.

The 17th annual Shamrock 'N Bowl will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Clancy's Village Bowl, Lauren Schneider, sorority vice president, said.

Last year the women of Kappa Delta raised more than $8,000 for the cause, she said.

Schneider, event co-chair, said the Shamrock 'N Bowl allowed many publics of Ball State to come together through an entertaining outlet. Kappa Delta encouraged the Muncie community, especially local Girl Scout troops, to bowl in the tournament. She said there were already three troops interested in competing in this year's tournament.

"I like that we incorporate Girl Scouts in our pursuit to prevent child abuse," Schneider said. "The girls love to bowl and they get introduced to the idea of philanthropy."

The number of children abused or neglected in the United States grew 33 percent over the last decade, according to PCA America statistics. In 1999 alone, confirmed cases of abuse and neglect reached 1.9 million. Statistics showed that three children die every day in the United States because of neglect and abuse.

Kappa Delta began its support for PCA America in 1981, with the Shamrock 'N Bowl event starting nationwide in 1983.

Schneider said the sorority has been able to raise more than $6 million to benefit child abuse prevention efforts.

PCA America will receive 20 percent of the proceeds from the Shamrock 'N Bowl, and the remaining 80 percent will stay in Muncie and benefit VSA arts.

VSA arts was created in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith in order to create a society in which all people with disabilities learn through, participate and enjoy the arts, according to VSA arts. VSA arts showcased the artistic abilities and accomplishments of artists with disabilities and provided resources and tools to support art programs in school and communities.

Bowling teams consist of four players, and there is a $40 registration fee. The fee includes three bowling games and shoes for all players, Schneider said.

Kappa Delta President Meredith McCaskill said the sorority sisters were looking forward to the Shamrock 'N Bowl.

"Not only do we raise a significant amount of money for an honorable cause, but our chapter also enjoys having fun at the annual event," McCaskill said.
