Sen. Richard Lugar will be Ball State University's Commencement speaker this May, according to a press release.
Lugar, the Senate's ranking Republican, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976 and won a sixth term in 2006 with 87 percent of the vote, according to his Web site.
The Senator currently helps to lead the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee and the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee.
"Sen. Lugar's career achievements will form the basis of a powerful and inspiring message for our entire university community and will make the 2009 spring commencement one of our most memorable," President Jo Ann Gora said in the press release.
