It seems like a Student Government Association free for all.
The Elections Board took Monday off instead of addressing campaign violations by two of the three slates running.
Cardinal Collaboration and University Coalition have been accused of e-mail campaigning, Elections Board chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said. Cardinal Collaboration used Gradebook to e-mail potential voters and University Coalition is under investigation for a similar violation.
Pretell-Vazquez said the Elections Board would convene Tuesday to address the issue because not everybody could meet Monday.
Incidents like this are why students don't respect SGA.
The last couple weeks, and especially Monday and today while voting is open, are the most important time of year for the Elections Board.
It should have had the foresight to schedule a meeting and a block of time for potential problems that could have arisen during the first day of voting.
The Elections Board failing to meet immediately to address potential solutions to the violations sets a horrible precedent for future boards and for the slates. Essentially slates have been told the board is too busy right now, and it will deal with problems later.
This is not the way to run an election.
This is not the way to earn students' trust and respect.
Meetings are not terribly difficult to arrange. Conference calls are an option if not everyone is able to make it.
But problems need to be addressed quickly.
Rules are nothing more than suggestions unless they are swiftly and strongly acted upon.
It's the final day of the campaign and election.
After Tuesday, time constraints will not be a huge concern for the Elections Board.
However, it currently has three slates of politicians chomping at the bit to run the student body.
Fines cannot be assessed after the election results have been certified, according to the elections code.
This is crunch time.
If the campaign is going to get dirty, now is when it would happen.
Hopefully the Elections Board is ready.
