MEN'S BASKETBALL: Western Michigan, Central Michigan lose Saturday

The Ball State University men's basketball team's 56-55 loss at Northern Illinois University Saturday doesn't mean the Cards are out of the running for a title.

Western Michigan University - which was a half-game below Mid-American West Division-leading Ball State (13-14, 7-7 MAC) in the MAC West standings directly after Ball State's loss today - lost 63-62 Saturday night at the University of Toledo, keeping the Broncos (9-19, 6-8 MAC) a full game behind the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, Central Michigan University - which came into today two games behind Ball State in the MAC West in third place - lost 57-56 at home to Eastern Michigan University on Saturday. The Chippewas (9-18, 5-9 MAC) are essentially now out of contention for the MAC West title.

Ball State and Western Michigan square off in Kalamazoo, Mich., Wednesday in the battle of the MAC West's No. 1 and 2 teams.

If Ball State wins, it will clinch the MAC West title and a No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament, but if the Cardinals lose, they will have to wait until next Sunday when Ball State hosts Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan hosts Central Michigan to determine the MAC West winner. Sunday's games are the final contests of the regular season.
