MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lampley, Jones net MAC honors

One day after earning a share of the Mid-American Conference West Division title and the No. 2 seed in this week's MAC Tournament in Cleveland, the Ball State University men's basketball team picked up a couple individual honors.

Senior guard Brandon Lampley and freshman center Jarrod Jones were both named All-MAC Honorable Mention selections, and Jones was named to the MAC All-Freshman team, the league office announced on Monday.

Coach Billy Taylor was not immediately available to comment, but is expected to be available via phone interview later this afternoon.

Lampley, one of three captains on the team alongside fellow seniors Anthony Newell and Laron Frazier, led the league in 3-point shooting percentage at 44.7 percent in his first season as a regular starter. He was second on the Cardinals in scoring at 10.3 points per game and had a team-best 78 assists on the year.

In MAC play, Lampley led the Cardinals with a 12.1 points-per-game average and shot a MAC-best 53.5 percent from 3-point range.

For Jones - the first freshman named to an All-MAC team since the 2005 season and the first Cardinal since Ray McCallum in 1980 - it didn't take long to make his impact on the program.

Jones opened up his career with 21 points and 12 rebounds in his first start of the season against Eastern Illinois University. He leads the team with 11 points and 7.4 rebounds-per-game averages, and earned MAC West Player of the Week recognition once this season.

Jones is also considered by many, including Taylor, as the frontrunner for the MAC Freshman of the Year award, which will be announced on Wednesday according to Matt McCollester, Assistant Director of Athletics Media Relations for Ball State.

Ball State (13-16, 7-9 MAC) will enter play in the MAC Tournament on Thursday when they play the winner of the No. 7 Central Michigan University/No. 10 Eastern Michigan University game at noon in Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena.
