MEN'S BASKETBALL: Central Michigan defeats Eastern Michigan in MAC Tournament first round

The Cardinals will face the Chippewas Thursday in the quarterfinals

CLEVELAND - After defeating Eastern Michigan University 62-49 today, Central Michigan University advanced to Thursday's quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, where they will face Ball State University.

The Chippewas led 26-21 at the half and used a strong second half from junior guard Robbie Harman to pull away in the opening game of the tournament. Harman finished the game with 13 points, all in the second half, and seven assists.

Senior forward Marcus Van led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for Central Michigan. Eastern Michigan was led by sophomore forward Brandon Bowdry with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Cardinals received a first-round bye after winning the MAC West Division. Ball State split the two meetings against Central Michigan, losing 71-65 at Central Michigan on Jan. 17 before defeating the Chippewas 53-44 on Feb. 25 at Worthen Arena.

"We're very fortunate that we have the opportunity to move on," Central Michigan coach Ernie Ziegler said. "Coach Taylor and Ball State will be chomping at the bit. The winner will be the true West champion."

Central Michigan held Eastern Michigan to 39 percent shooting. The Eagles entered the game on a MAC-high four-game winning streak.

The game was very physical and each team was assessed a technical foul for a scuffle near the end of the game. Harman expects Thursday's matchup to be more of the same.

"It'll be a tough game like any other in the MAC," Harman said. "I'm excited to get them on a neutral court and the toughest team is going to win."
