The Ball State gymnastics team placed second out of three teams Sunday afternoon by posting a score of 191.825 in a meet against Michigan State University and the University of California, Berkeley.
Host Michigan State won the meet with a score of 195.050, and California finished third with a 190.725.
The win puts the Cardinals, 4-10 (1-5 Mid-American Conference), three victories above last year's 1-12 (0-6 MAC) showing.
Freshman Kayla Kmiecik had her career best on the balance beam with a 9.725.
For the first time all season, a score of 48 or higher was earned on the team's balance beam effort. The Cardinals tallied a 48.350.
Teresa Phipps and Amanda Davies competed despite suffering mild sprained ankles earlier in the week. The two matched their scores, along with Brittney Emmons, on the vault with a 9.675.
Emmons earned a fourth-place finish overall on the floor routine with a score of 9.80, her career high in the event.
Daneen Haba executed a career best on the floor routine with a score of 9.775.
Rounding out the top scores for the Cardinals was junior Bibiana Rodriguez on the uneven bars with a 9.600.
The team will compete next at Arizona State University on Friday against Arizona State, California State University, Fullerton and the University of Nebraska.
