Blood drive rewards students with free meal

Anyone willing to give up an hour and endure the prick of a needle can get a free meal and possibly save a life today and tomorrow.

Several Ball State University organizations are having the Angels for Life Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Thursday in Pruis Hall. Students who donate will receive snacks and other free products from local businesses.

Kim Hiatt, who helped organize the blood drive, said she hopes to collect at least 300 units.

"To me, what is frustrating is the typical percent of people who donate is 5 percent; we don't even get 1 percent on campus," Hiatt said, "and that's young blood."

Hiatt said it should take less than an hour to donate, and participants can receive free merchandise such as coupons for Noodles & Company.

"When you're strapped on finances, a free meal is a pretty good deal," she said.

The blood drive is sponsored by the Ball State Staff Council, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Pre-Health Professions Club.
