For the first time this season, a Ball State University baseball player was not named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, but sophomore Kolbrin Vitek did garner West Division Pitcher of the Week Monday.
Vitek made two starts last week and had a 0.82 ERA. He picked up the series-clinching victory against the University of Akron on Sunday and left with the lead at the University of Notre Dame on Wednesday but finished with a no decision. In 11 innings, Vitek struck out 15 batters and walked one.
The sophomore was also nominated for Player of the Week after excelling at the plate as well.
Playing third base in the first two games against Akron and as designated hitter when he was on the mound, Vitek went 8-for-17 with four runs. Overall this year Vitek is 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA and a .372 batting average. He also leads the team with a .679 slugging percentage.
Prior to the start of the season, Vitek was named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch List by The College Baseball Foundation. The award is presented each year to annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player.
Last year Vitek was named First Team Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball.
Northern Illinois University junior outfielder Jordin Hood was named MAC West Player of the Week after helping the Huskies sweep the University at Buffalo to open MAC play. Ohio University sophomore center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire was named MAC East Player of the week and Kent State University junior Brad Stillings earned MAC East Pitcher of the Week honors.
Ball State will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Indiana State University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Terre Haute.
