Ball State receives $950,000 earmark

Ball State University has received about $1 million in federal funding, which it will put toward the next phase of the McKinley Avenue construction project.

The U.S. Congress approved $950,000 to go toward the McKinley-Riverside Avenues Safety Improvement Project, according to a Ball State press release. The money comes from the $410 billion omnibus appropriations bill, which President Barack Obama signed last week.

U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar helped the university obtain the money, according to the press release.

"This important project does more than enhance the campus; it improves the safety of our main thoroughfare," Ball State President Jo Ann Gora said in a press statement. "The infusion of funds puts completion of the project within reach. We appreciate Sen. Lugar's ongoing support of Ball State."

The university expects the third phase of the McKinley project to cost about $6.4 million. The first two phases were completed in 2006 and cost the university about $10.68 million.
