Ball State kicks off Greek Week on Monday

From Greece to China and back to Muncie, Ball State University greeks will travel around the world in seven days for Greek Week.

Cory Schneider, Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations, said Greek Week 2009 kicks off 8 p.m. Monday in Ball Gym with pizza, drinks and inflatable games. The theme for the event is ancient Greece, and many of the activities will be Olympic style, he said.

"Togas are encouraged," Schneider said.

Jen Lilly, director of Greek Week, said the purpose of Greek Week is to promote unity among the greek community.

The theme for this year's Greek Week activities is "Around the World in Seven Days" and greek teams for events will be named after the different modes of transportation, Lilly said.

"We are striving to create bonds and ties with the whole community," Lilly said.

Schneider said the week is positioned to achieve one goal: uniting the community through expression of similarities.

Not only is the week a great opportunity to network with greeks in other chapters, but it also fosters the deep sense of pride that members have in their community and gives them reason to celebrate, Schneider said.

Lilly said Sunday's Grand Chapter meeting will highlight the 90th anniversary of greek life at Ball State. There will be a slide show and presentation, she said.

Not listed in the official events is a pop tab drive for the Ronald McDonald House, Lilly said.

Non-greek participation is encouraged, Lilly said. There are two Greek Week events that are open to greeks only: Thursday's Scholarship Tea and the Grand Chapter meeting, she said.
