Artist brought in for student lecture series

More than 20 people gathered in the Atrium on Wednesday evening to see a mobile art gallery display five performance art pieces.

Hannah Barnes, faculty mentor for the Fine Arts League, said she invited Columbus, Ohio, artist Dina Sherman's IMA Gallery to Ball State University to perform the Soap Box Lecture Series.

Sherman said IMA Gallery is a miniature art gallery wall and floor that attaches to her leg, turning her and the setting into an exhibit.

"As soon as it's on my person I become the gallery," Sherman said.

The Soap Box Lecture Series gave five students and professors the chance to perform their art ranging from personal journal writings to an anti-racism presentation, Sherman said.

She usually does the series outdoors, she said, and the Atrium setting significantly contrasted previous performances. She said the crowd was great and the performers did "an amazing job."

Maura Jasper, assistant professor of electronic media video, said she was interested in situations in which people could express themselves. She decided the gallery provided an opportunity to do that after looking at the gallery's Web site. She said she enjoyed the performance and the crowd it had.

"Everybody was awesome," Jasper said. "Anybody who stops to look at some weird art thing will always be awesome to me."
