A plug in the main sewer line running under the University Theatre caused a flood on the building's lower level Friday afternoon.
A few inches of water and sewage covered the ticket office and restroom floors, according to Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities planning and management.
The water started to come up through drains in the restrooms about 1:30 p.m., Kenyon said, and at first workers thought the plug was in the building's plumbing. The problem started in the city sewer line, he said.
"It took a while to figure out what the problem was," he said. "I don't think it was our responsibility."
Auditions and shows are scheduled for this weekend elsewhere in the building, Kenyon said, but the city and university will hurry to get the flood cleaned up and properly sanitized.
He said he thought the cleanup would take about a day depending on the amount of people who could help.
"This will take them a lot of work," Kenyon said. "We've got trained people and the right equipment to get it cleaned up pretty quick."
