Record label launches tonight at Doc's Downtown

Blank Records, a local startup label founded by Ball State University students, will kick things off with a launch party tonight at Doc's Music Hall.

The lineup at the downtown bar includes Shaggy Juba, Tuesday Night's Squad, Kick Stand, The Blues Funk Project and The $2 Pints, according to Nick Gebert, who does promotions for the record label.

Gerbert said he and Ball State students Kalem Newton, Brent Cunningham and Jake Lentz started Blank Records to distribute local music without changing the way bands express themselves. Gerbert said that's an influence bigger labels can sometimes have on musicians.

Gebert, who is a student at Campbellsville University, said the label records all genres as long as the musicians are good.

After Newton got the idea for the label, Gebert said, he brought Gebert, Cunningham and Lentz on to help with promotions, contracts, networking and other technical aspects of running a label.

All four have a great interest in music, Gebert said, and he thinks tonight's launch party will be good for the label.

"These are all really good bands," Gebert said, "and we feel like the audience will really enjoy the show."

The shows starts about 8:30 p.m. and will have a $5 cover charge.
