All slates running for Student Government Association are now eligible to campaign. Cardinal Impact, Cardinal Collaboration and University Coalition have until March 3 to convince students why one should be trusted over another. Here are some suggestions for change to ensure the student body and its needs are as well represented as possible.
Cardinal Impact, the slate from the first nomination convention, has now severed ties with almost all those involved with the application packet fiasco. Former campaign manager and former Daily News employee Kyle Ellis was working as the slate's scheduling coordinator until Sunday evening.
Cardinal Impact has done much to damage its credibility with the students and that damage can never be repaired. The only way to somewhat cope with and rectify the damage is to be blunt, open and honest with the entire student body.
Nobody can change the past. We're not suggesting anyone vote for Impact. Students are not obligated to forgive the slate or give it a second chance, but Impact should do everything in its power to ensure this does not happen again.
Cardinal Collaboration entered the second nomination convention and was accepted immediately, the only slate to have done so. However, when asked about its platform at the second convention, Collaboration did not have one.
Since then, the slate has formed a platform and now needs to spend the next few days promoting it whenever and wherever it can.
This slate claims to be student centered and now is the time to prove it by finding any student with an opinion and infusing it with what it's trying to do. See if the students have any concerns the slate didn't think of or have a different perspective on an issue it's planning to address.
University Coalition (formerly Cardinal Coalition) tried to enter the race at the second nomination convention, however, it was denied because not all slate members met the eligibility criteria. This slate proved it did not thoroughly understand SGA by-laws, which are good to know when you want to run the organization.
However, since the convention the slate has replaced two members and has said it has a platform that will be distributed Monday. The platform could not be released earlier because of campaign regulations.
Coalition needs to make up for lost time and get its name out there to anyone who will listen. Approach students and let them know who Coalition is and what it's about. As of now, Coalition is the least-known slate.
Each slate has its own positive and negative qualities, but this is the condensed information.
The question now is who will be able to overcome them and lead the Ball State University student body for another year.
Students will decide the answer.
