The No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team lost to George Mason University 30-25, 30-26, 30-24 Thursday at Worthen Arena.
Setter Ethan Pheister said the team played terrible against the Patriots.
"We came out scared the entire time. No one came out wanting to take any risks with there serves and attacking and setting," he said. "I wish I would have taken some risks and everyone else would have taken risks. ... We can't come out scared against anyone, because they are going to jump on us."
This was the Cardinals' (1-4, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) fourth consecutive non-conference loss and its second loss to an unranked team this season.
George Mason (3-1, 1-0 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) out hit Ball State .380 to .235, including a .484 attack percentage in its four-point second game win.
George Mason outside attacker Kyle Gramit had a match-high 14 kills. Outside attacker Todd Chamberlain led Ball State with 12 kills.
Coach Joel Walton said the George Mason out-played Ball State. The coach also said the team played with a lack of consistent passion throughout the match.
"Right that continues to be one of the things that we are trying to find. The group of players who can go out and play with passion." For more men's volleyball coverage, read Friday's issue of The Ball State Daily News.
