The Ball State University men's volleyball team defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 30-19, 30-26, 30-27 on Friday at Milwaukee.
The Cardinals (4-4, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) had two players with at least five blocks as the team out-blocked the Raiders 12 to 7.5. Middle attacker Andy Nelson had a match-high seven blocks and setter Ethan Pheister had five blocks - two blocks from his career high.
Coach Joel Walton said he was happy with the team's defense throughout the match. He also said the high amount of blocks was a result of Ball State's serving.
"We had good serving runs and were able to pass their float serves," Walton said. "It set up on the good serve."
Walton also said the defense made up for the team's average offensive performance. The Cardinals had a .226 as three players each had a negative attacking percentage, including starting outside attacker Eric Schulte. Schulte finished the match with three kills and a -.167 attack percentage.
With this win, Ball State extends its winning streak to four matches. It is also the first time this season the Cardinals - ranked No. 12 in the preseason coaches poll - do not have a losing record.
Ball State's next match will be against Carthage College - a Division III team - at 8 p.m. Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
"They are a good team and will be ready to play in their gym," Walton said.
