FOOTBALL: Lineage of MAC quarterbacks pays off

INDIANAPOLIS - NFL teams are taking note of the history of Mid-American Conference quarterbacks at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine.

University at Buffalo quarterback Drew Willy said he has talked to people from the NFL about the conference's history of producing NFL quarterbacks. The MAC's reputation will likely help him and Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis, Willy said.

"I think scouts will look at it, you know, the past MAC quarterbacks that have done well," Willy said. "I think it's something that should be looked at. "

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback coach Ken Anderson talked to Willy about all of their 2008 quarterbacks being MAC products, Willy said. The Steelers top three quarterbacks -¡- Ben Roethlisberger from Miami University, Byron Leftwich from Marshall University and Charlie Batch from Eastern Michigan University - all played in the MAC.

"It was pretty impressive to hear that," Willy said. "I didn't even know that."

Chad Pennington from Marshall, Charlie Frye from the University of Akron and Bruce Gradkowski from the University of Toledo are also among the group of NFL players who played quarterback in the MAC.
