WOMEN'S TENNIS: Indiana sweeps Ball State to end winning streak

Coach says Cards were shell-shocked against Hoosiers

Riding the wave of confidence from their most recent victory against Wright State University, the Ball State University women's tennis team ran into an Indiana University team that proved to be too much to handle in a 7-0 Hoosier victory.

After the matchup between Ball State and Indiana, coach Kathy Bull said there was overwhelming playing by the Hoosiers players.

"We looked shell-shocked," Bull said. "We weren't very competitive on the doubles side, but we played a little better in singles."

The doubles team of freshman Dena Boulieris and sophomore Georgina Thomson fell in the No. 1 spot with a score of 8-1. This was followed by an 8-2 loss from the No. 2 team of freshmen Sarah Hebble and Kylee Johnson. The Cardinal doubles competition ended with an 8-0 of Ellie Crasto and Rachel Surowiec.

Freshman Sarah Hebble, playing the No. 1 singles position for the Cardinals, turned in one of the best performances of the evening. Matched up against sophomore Katya Zapadalova - from Yaroslavl, Russia, and played in the semi-finals of the Russian Championships - Hebble lost 6-4, 6-4.

"in high school, I didn't play anyone like her," Hebble said.

Despite the level of competition, Hebble said she entered the match as usual.

"I go in every match with the same mind set," she said. "I just think about how I want to hit the ball and how to win the point."

Dena Boulieris fell 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot, and Hylee Johnson fell with the same score at the No. 3 singles. In her second match since April, sophomore Hayley Hall was forced to retire with a score of 6-2, 3-0 due to a lingering back injury suffered last spring.

"Kathy and I talked, and we just trying to save my back," Hall said. "We didn't want overdo it, it was more precautionary," she added.
