The Ball State University men's basketball team takes on Northern Illinois University tonight for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Worthen Arena.
Obviously, the main focus for Cards fans is how the team will deal with the loss of senior forward, captain, leading scorer and rebounder Anthony Newell for the season due to a compound fracture to his right tibia and fibula suffered in Saturday's 46-42 win at Eastern Michigan University.
I'm predicting that senior guard/forward Rob Giles will replace Newell in the starting lineup for the time being. Giles is averaging 4.9 points and 2.9 rebounds this season, and averaged 2.9 points and 2.4 rebounds last season in 22 games.
But without further ado, here are my notes on tonight's matchup with the Huskies:

Northern Illinois Notes- Picked to finish sixth (last) in the MAC West in the Preseason Polls.- 2007-08 MAC Freshman of the Year, Darion "Jake" Anderson was the first Northern Illinois freshman to lead the team in scoring since the 1995-96 season. Anderson averaged 12.2 points and 2.6 assists per game last season. He also scored a career high-tying 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting against Ball State on March 4.- Anderson was on the 2008-09 All-MAC Preseason Team.- Northern Illinois is looking for its first 2-0 start in MAC play since the 1980-81 season, when the Huskies were MAC regular season champions.- The Huskies defeated Toledo 75-51 on Jan. 10 in their best defensive game of the season.
