MEN'S BASKETBALL: Newell to miss remainder of season with broken leg

Ball State University men's basketball senior forward Anthony Newell will miss the remainder of the season due a broken leg suffered in the second half on the Cardinals' 46-42 win at Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, Matt McCollester, Assistant Director of Athletics Communications for Ball State, said in a press release Sunday evening.

Newell underwent surgery at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Mich. - the same hospital the team captain, alongside head coach Billy Taylor and assistant coach Bob Simmons, stayed at last night following the injury, McCollester said.

"He underwent surgery Saturday night to repair the injury and the prognosis is good," the press release said.

Five points away from becoming the 25th player in Ball State men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point career mark, Newell was injured with 12:04 remaining in the second half of Saturday's Mid-American Conference opener against the Eagles.

Newell, going up for a offensive rebound, landed awkwardly in traffic and immediately collapsed to the ground, then was surrounded by medical personnel in about a five minute break from the game that had the Convocation Center silent. He was put in a full right leg brace and then carried off the court.

A 2007-08 All-MAC Second Team and 2008-09 Preseason All-MAC selection, Newell had already earned three MAC West Division Player of the Week selections this season. The senior is also leading the team in scoring at 15.2 points per game and rebounding at 9.4 rebounds per game.
