FOOTBALL: Alumni group pay for Gov's trip to bowl game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A Ball State University alumni group will pick up the tab for Gov. Mitch Daniels' flight to Mobile, Ala., to see No. 22 Ball State play the University of Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl.

The Ball State University Foundation offered to pick up the cost of the flight to Tuesday night's game after reporters raised questions about Daniels' use of a state airplane as the governor works to trim the state budget.

Press Secretary Jane Jankowski said the use of a state aircraft is proper because the governor is representing the state of Indiana. But she said the governor later decided to take the foundation's offer to pay for the flight. The Ball State Foundation already was providing the governor's ticket and lodging.

This is the second reported time that Daniels has attended a Ball State football game this season. The governor attended the Cardinals' win against Navy on Sept. 5 in Muncie and sat in the student section for the first half of the game.

Both times the game has been nationally televised on the ESPN network.

The GMAC Bowl will be telelevised on ESPN starting at 8 p.m., and it will also air live on WCRD 91.3 FM, a media partner of The Ball State Daily News.
