MOBILE, Ala. - A slow start and a shutout in the second half foiled Ball State University's attempt to win its first bowl game in 84 years Tuesday night at the GMAC Bowl against the University of Tulsa.
The No. 22 Cardinals never led before suffering a 45-13 loss, which moved its all-time bowl record to 0-5-1. It also ruined Ball State's chance to tie for the most wins in college football this season with 13. Instead, the Cardinals will finish the year 12-2 and likely fall out of the top 25.
Ball State trailed 24-13 at halftime, but Tulsa opened the third quarter with an 87-yard drive that finished with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Johnson to receiver Slick Shelley. The Golden Hurricane added two more touchdowns later in the second half.
