WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Late game let down hurts Cards

Top-25 Louisville outscores Ball State 49-20 in 2nd half

After the weekend's two games, the Ball State University women's basketball team finished 1-1 and brings its overall record to 3-3.

Ball State lost its Sunday game against the No. 13 University of Louisville 82-51 and defeated the University of Evansville on Friday in overtime 81-78.

Coach Kelly Packard said she thought Ball State executed the first half well against Louisville. Ball State trailed Louisville 33-31 at halftime.

Packard said the team executed on defense by boxing Louisville out and was disciplined.

"I warned them at the half that Louisville typically has big second halves," she said.

Louisville outscored Ball State 49-20 in the second half. Louisville had 57 rebounds and outrebounded Ball State by 34.

Forward Emily Maggert led the team in scoring with 15 points.

Packard said the team didn't respond to Louisville during the second half. The team went away from its game plan, she said.

Packard said she told the players after the game that they were the same players they were at the beginning of the game and nothing changed at half.

"We lost our focus and tried to respond out of frustration instead of execution," she said.

Although Ball State lost on Sunday, the women's basketball team defeated the University of Evansville on Friday in overtime 81-78.

Guard Porchia Green led team scoring with 28 points against Evansville. Ball State and Evansville were tied 73-73 at the end of the second half.

Green said the players had gone through practices where they played almost and hour and a half of defense so they were ready for the game. She also said it felt good to lead the team in scoring.

"Everybody's just doing their parts and opened it up for me," Green said after defeating Evansville. "Who knows, someday it might be for me. It might be for somebody else."

Packard said the team played some of its best defense all season against Evansville.

"I feel like we stepped forward quite a bit," Packard said after the Evansville game. "We've really been working on our mentality to compete, to keep our intensity level not from swinging from such a drastic level."
