WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals overcome late deficit for win

McDonald leads team by making big shots on her 21st birthday

As the game came closer to its conclusion, the Ball State University women's basketball team found itself down 48-55 against Wright State University with about five and half minutes remaining.

Coach Kelly Packard then gave her team some advice on what defense to play during a timeout.

"I said, 'At this point, whatever you're going to do I really don't even care,'" she said.

All she asked was that the team pick a defense, play hard and box out, she said.

Ball State then went on to defeat Wright State with a score of 65-61. Ball State has a 4-3 record.

Ball State led Wright State 36-23 at the half but was outscored 21-5 in the first eight minutes and 43 seconds of the second half.

"Were getting perhaps a PhD in losing the lead and coming back," Packard said.

Packard said although her team lost the lead, Audrey McDonald made an important 3-point shot with 1:10 remaining in the game to bring the score to 62-57.

McDonald scored 15 points and was 4-of-6 from the 3-point line on her 21st birthday.

"The win was all I wanted," she said.

Ball State shot 64 percent from behind the 3-point line. Wright State shot 6.7 percent.

Packard said she decided to let the Raiders shoot 3-pointers because nobody was shooting well.

Guard Porchia Green led scoring with 22 points. Green shot 6-for-6 from the field in the first half, and was 2-for-5 in the second half.

Green said she might have been more tentative at the beginning of the second half, but she felt she kept on attacking.

Packard said although the team snatched a victory in the final moments of the game, the team still needed to work on improving.

"We're still very elementary, quite honestly, in being able to maintain our intensity and our focus on defense," she said.
