Ball State University is seeking students' input about which professors to grant a chance to teach their dream course.
Associate professor of sociology Mellisa Holtzman said students can nominate professors for the Excellence in Teaching Award through Dec. 12 on Blackboard.
"It's important to students because it allows them to recognize a faculty member who is doing especially well in the classroom," she said.
The Office of Teaching and Learning Advancement and the Office of Academic Assessment and Institutional Research choose three winners every year who receive a monetary award and the opportunity to teach a class they've always wanted, she said.
Using a mathematical formula, the two offices choose the top 10 candidates from the list of student nominated professors, Holtzman said. The candidates submit proposals for their dream course, essays about their teaching philosophies and the affect their courses will have on the students who take them, she said.
A committee comprised of Holtzman, three other faculty members and a student will review the proposals and interview the candidates before selecting the winners.
Holtzman said allowing professors to teach a dream course is a wonderful opportunity for the professor and the students because it allows the professor to have fun with the course and give students a learning experience they normally wouldn't get.
