The Multicultural Center and the Multicultural Advisers of Residence Life will have a Kwanzaa celebration in the Park Hall Multipurpose Room from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Ali Pickens, graduate assistant for the Multicultural Center, said the event will feature traditional celebratory Kwanzaa readings and songs, a performance by the Rhythm Dance Troupe and a meal comprised of African, Caribbean and South American Food.
"Kwanzaa is a uniquely African-American celebration that focuses on traditional African values of family, community, commerce and self-improvement," she said. "It's a time for African-American people to reaffirm their ancestors and culture."
The term "Kwanzaa" is derived from the word "Kifwahili" which means "first fruit of the harvest", Pickens said.
Dr. Maulana Karenga founded Kwanzaa in 1966, she said.
According to the Official Kwanzaa Web site, it is observed from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 by 18 million people worldwide.
The celebration is free and open to all students, Pickens said.
