Ball State University men's basketball senior forward Anthony Newell was selected Monday as the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week. It is the second MAC West Player of the Week selection for Newell this season and fourth overall selection in his career.
"It was a good week," said Newell, who leads the team with 15.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. "It's something you're definitely proud of."
Newell averaged 13 points and 12.5 rebounds in Ball State's road games last week against IPFW and the University of Evansville. Against IPFW on Dec. 1, Newell hit the game-winning 15 foot jump shot as time expired to give the Cardinals (4-3) the 54-52 win, and against Evansville on Saturday, Newell had 15 points and 12 boards to lead the Cardinals in their 73-63 loss.
Newell, who was a Preseason All-MAC team selection, was one of two Cardinals who earned the selection last season as graduated senior Peyton Stovall received the award on Jan. 7 and Newell received the selection one week later. Newell also received MAC West Player of the Week as a sophomore.
Newell is also one of two players to average a double-double so far this season. He shares that accolade with Ohio University's Jerome Tillman.
Ball State hosts No. 9 Purdue University at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Worthen Arena. For a complete preview of the game, read Tuesday's edition of The Ball State Daily News.
